Get to know Us (Cameroon): The Heartbeat of Africa

Cameroon is not just a country—it’s an experience. Often referred to as Africa in Miniature, Cameroon embodies the continent’s incredible diversity, from its people and languages to its landscapes, cuisine, and traditions. At our Anglophone Cameroon Association of Manitoba (ACAM), we proudly carry this rich legacy with us, keeping our roots alive even here in the heart of Canada.

Where Is Cameroon?

Cameroon is located in Central Africa, bordered by Nigeria to the west, Chad to the northeast, the Central African Republic to the east, and Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of the Congo to the south. With a coastline along the Atlantic Ocean, Cameroon is a vibrant gateway between West and Central Africa.

A Land of Languages

Cameroon is officially bilingual—English and French are its national languages. But that's just the surface. The country is home to over 250 ethnic languages spoken across more than 250 ethnic groups. This linguistic and cultural richness forms a deep sense of identity and pride, especially for the Anglophone communities in the Northwest and Southwest regions.

Culture & Traditions

From the grassfields kingdoms of the Northwest to the vibrant coastal communities of Limbe and Buea, Cameroonian culture is marked by colorful festivals, music, dance, and traditional ceremonies. Whether it's the elegant rhythms of Makossa, the soulful beats of Bikutsi, or storytelling, Cameroon’s heartbeat is deeply cultural.

In Manitoba, ACAM members proudly uphold these traditions through:

  • Monthly ACAM meetings

  • Language and cultural advocacy workshops for youths

  • Active Members of The African Community of Manitoba Inc - ACOMI

  • Community outreach and support programs for newly arriving Cameroonians

  • Showcasing our attire, food, and art at some specific Canadian multicultural festivals

  • Celebrating our very own cultural day at least once a year.

Taste of Cameroon

No post about Cameroon is complete without mentioning our world-famous cuisine. From spicy Eru and garri to fragrant Ndolé, Koki, Jollof rice, and suya, our dishes are bold, EXTREMELY flavorful, and filled with history. They reflect our connection to the land and the stories of our people. At ACAM, food is a central part of every gathering—because nothing bonds a community like a good Cameroonian meal.

Natural Beauty & Geography

Cameroon’s landscapes are simply breathtaking. You’ll find:

  • Mount Cameroon – West Africa’s highest peak and an active volcano

  • Rainforests of the South – Rich in biodiversity

  • The Sahel and Savannahs of the North – Home to majestic wildlife

  • Beaches, lakes, waterfalls, and fertile valleys – Pure visual poetry

It’s no wonder Cameroon is called “Africa in Miniature”—you’ll find nearly every major African ecosystem in one place.

A Legacy of Resilience

Cameroon’s history includes pre-colonial kingdoms, German colonization, British and French mandates, and eventually independence in 1960 and 1961. Anglophone Cameroonians, in particular, have a rich story of perseverance, advocacy, and community building. It is this strength that many of us bring to our new homes in Canada.

ACAM continues to honor this legacy by creating space for dialogue, development, and diaspora unity. Our community tries to uplift one another and builds bridges between our Cameroonian past and our Manitoban future.
